What is Attention Ops?
Attention Ops is the discipline of building the systems that make a brand the answer when people come looking: in search engines, AI answers, and video platforms like YouTube. Instead of renting attention through ads, it builds owned assets that keep earning attention long after they are published.

Attention Ops in five lines.
- Goal
- Be the answer when people come looking.
- Works with
- Voluntary attention: people who arrive with a question.
- Produces
- Owned assets (articles, videos, answers) that keep earning attention.
- Runs as
- A continuous operating loop, not a campaign.
- Opposite of
- Rented or captured attention: ads, interruption, provocation.
People no longer look in one place.
The same question now gets asked in Google, in ChatGPT, in Perplexity, and on YouTube. “SEO” describes one of those surfaces. “Content marketing” describes the output, not the system that decides what to make and whether it worked.
Attention Ops names the whole discipline. The “Ops” is deliberate: like DevOps and RevOps, it is continuous operating work with a feedback loop, not a one-off campaign.
Six steps. Run continuously.
Every cycle adds an asset that keeps working. Over time the loop, not any single piece of content, becomes the advantage.
- 01
Find what people ask
Start from real questions: what your customers type into Google, ask ChatGPT, or search for on YouTube.
- 02
Create the best answer
Turn first-hand expertise into the most useful response to that question, not another generic article.
- 03
Get found in search and AI
Publish where the question gets asked, and make the answer easy for search engines and AI assistants to cite.
- 04
Measure
Track what gets found, what brings the right visitors, and what turns into business.
- 05
Improve
Strengthen what works, fix what almost works, and stop what does not.
- 06
Repeat
Every cycle adds another asset that keeps earning attention without a budget behind it.
Attention Ops vs. SEO, AEO, and content marketing.
| Term | Focus | Relation to Attention Ops |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Ranking pages in search engines. | One surface inside Attention Ops. |
| AEO / GEO | Being cited in AI answers such as ChatGPT or Perplexity. | Another surface inside Attention Ops. |
| Content marketing | Producing content, often measured by output. | Attention Ops starts from the question and is measured by being found. |
| Paid media | Buying reach through ads and algorithms. | Rented attention. It stops when the budget stops. |
| Attention Ops | The operating system across all of these surfaces. | Organized around the questions people already ask. |
Three questions before anything else.
- 01What do people ask before they buy from you?
- 02Where do they ask it: Google, ChatGPT, YouTube, somewhere else?
- 03What would the best possible answer look like, and do you already have it?
Common questions about Attention Ops.
Is Attention Ops just SEO?
No. SEO is one surface Attention Ops works on. Attention Ops covers every place people look for answers, including AI assistants and YouTube, and treats the work as a repeatable loop that runs from the question to the business result.
Does Attention Ops replace advertising?
Not necessarily. Ads rent attention for as long as you pay. Attention Ops builds assets that keep earning attention after they are published. Many brands will use both, but only one of them compounds.
Who is Attention Ops for?
Anyone whose customers look for answers before they buy: experts, coaches, specialist businesses, and the teams and agencies that support them. You need real knowledge worth finding, not a large budget.
Can anyone really own attention?
Strictly speaking, no. People can always look away. What you own are the assets that keep earning it: articles, videos, answers, a channel. The attention keeps coming back to them.
Where does the term come from?
Federico Jan introduced the term in 2026. It follows the pattern of DevOps and RevOps: a continuous operating discipline with a feedback loop. We Dream Labs develops the idea, and Gomnee is the first product built on it.
